Djanaïna François : le cinéma comme évasion

Pour ce rôle, Djanaïna François a dû revenir au pays natal après plus de 10 ans dans le pays de l’Oncle Sam. Entre honneur et sentiment d’appartenance, la jeune actrice s’est réjouie d’avoir pris part à ce projet qui lui a permis de renouer avec la vie en Haïti et de se retrouver pour la toute première fois de sa carrière au Festival de Cannes.

« Je suis vraiment reconnaissante d’avoir été l’un des acteurs d’un film haïtien dans lequel j’ai pu parler créole et côtoyer de plus près la réalité haïtienne. Pour moi qui ai quitté le pays depuis 2009, la sensation était vraiment extraordinaire sur le plateau », a confié la native de Port-au-Prince. Elle a répondu au casting via Instagram avant d’être retenue pour le rôle et de rentrer en Haïti uniquement pour Freda.

Ayant immigré aux États-Unis à l’âge de 15 ans, Djanaïna François a toujours été attirée par le septième art. Cette passion est devenue pour elle le seul moyen d’avancer, dans un pays qui n’est pas le sien. « Le cinéma et le théâtre m’ont intriguée dès l’enfance. Après mes études classiques, j’ai commencé à multiplier les auditions, jusqu’à ce que je décide en 2013 de me former. J’ai pris cette décision parce que, pour moi, le cinéma c’était au départ mon unique moyen d’évasion. Lorsqu’on vit loin de son pays, on fait face à de nombreuses difficultés. En tant qu’immigrant, tu dois t’adapter à une culture totalement différente de la tienne et cela t’affecte psychologiquement. Il te faut trouver un medium pour pouvoir t’exprimer », a avoué l’actrice de 27 ans.

Sous le chapeau d’Esther, la jeune dame est la sœur de Freda et la plus belle de la famille. C’est une jeune fille consciente de ses charmes et qui, encouragée par sa mère, les utilise pour arriver à ses fins, comme se marier à un sénateur et changer ses conditions de vie modestes. Esther, c’est aussi la complicité enviable entre deux sœurs qui s’aiment au-delà de leurs conceptions différentes de la vie. « Je suis très attachée à ce personnage. Pour s’imprégner du rôle, il m’a fallu me mettre à la place de toutes ces jeunes filles pareilles à Esther et comprendre les raisons qui les motivent à se trouver coûte que coûte un homme riche et sortir de cette vie de privations », a indiqué celle qui s’adonne également à l’écriture; à travers ce rôle, elle a dépeint la vie de nombreuses jeunes Haïtiennes.
